How I Got a Free Oil Change and You Can Too!

It seemed too good to be true. A free oil change? The prospect was exciting but I wasn’t sure if it would really work out. I took a chance and went through the steps to see if I could, indeed, get a free oil change.

It seemed too good to be true. A free oil change?! The prospect was exciting but I wasn't sure if it would really work out. I took a chance and went through the steps to see if I could, indeed, make it happen.

How To Get a FREE Oil Change

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to give honest, factual feedback to the companies you use? Here’s your chance! As a secret shopper, you provide valuable feedback and get compensated in return!

Who Can Be A Secret Shopper?

Anyone with a computer and transportation can be a secret shopper. You may be required to attach pictures and copies of receipts as well but a simple phone camera will do the trick.

What Do I Secret Shop For?

In this case, Bestmark has many opportunities for an oil change and tire rotation on a Chevy that is a 2002-2015 with 4K – 100K miles. The vehicle can even be borrowed.

There are other opportunities as well. These might include visiting a certain place of business and asking questions or eating at one of the secret shopper locations.

Why Would I Want to Be a Secret Shopper?

It pays to be a secret shopper! Bestmark reimburses a set amount for the oil change and tire rotation plus gives you a little extra for doing the shop. In my area, the reimbursement for the service is up to $55 and the cash payment is $20.

Sure it’s a little extra work, but you end up with a free oil change and the business receives valuable feedback from an unbiased shopper.

Do you ever notice things that would make your experience better at a place of business?! This is your chance to give factual information on your experiences.

When Do I Secret Shop?

Pick a shop and a menu will pop up with available dates. Choose a date that works for you.

Where Do I Secret Shop?

Business names may not be given on the shop page until you choose a shop. In my case, it listed ‘Chevrolet’ and had a choice of cities. I ended up doing my shop at the dealership I purchased my vehicle from and normally go to.

How Do I Secret Shop?

  • Sign up to be a secret shopper for Bestmark.
  • Choose a shop.
  • Choose a date for the shop.
  • Read the instructions.
  • Perform the shop.
  • Fill out the forms online.
  • Get paid!

How Much Time Will It Take?

The time depends on you and your secret shop. I was a little anxious this first time around and took a few hours to thoroughly read everything I could. The actual shop took a few hours (it was a busy day) and then probably another hour to finish filling out my survey.

The Nitty Gritty

I paid $60.12 for the oil change and tire rotation. I received a check for $75. This amount was a $55 reimbursement for the oil change and tire rotation plus a $20 cash payment. (Amounts will vary by location.)

In my case, my shop was done on Martin Luther King Day, January 19. I received the full reimbursement plus cash payment on Saturday, January 31. That’s a pretty fast turn around, if you ask me!

    Hey Jayleen.

I like the idea of being a secret shopper and even signed up for a similar service in Canada. I haven’t worked for them yet since all the jobs they have so far don’t apply to my personal situations.

I have had friends though who have been secret shoppers and they have enjoyed the experience, not to mention the free services and compensation.

if you can do it, I say, why not! 🙂

Take care and all the best.

Absolutely Lyle! It’s true though, you have to consider the time and gas a shop will take and decide if it’s worth it to you. I’m not willing to drive 30 minutes for a $15 shop but if it’s somewhere I go or something I need, I’m all over it!

This sounds like fun! It might not have worked out in the small area I came from, but this place is hustle and bustle city! Thanks for the tip Jayleen! 😀

It was fun … a little nerve wracking too, I must say. I had to be extra observant, like … how tall is that guy who helped me? What color was his hair? Lol! I’m glad I did it though!

Oh man! I’m not a good witness at all. I’ll have to work on really checking people out. Unless someone has something that really stands out, like purple spiky hair or 1 floppy ear, I rarely recognize them again. 😛
