Garage Sale Handbook

1) Tables

Everything sells better if it is within easy reach. Borrow the tables you need! It also works to turn over big boxes to use as tabletops. Have saw horses? Use an old door or piece of wood on top for extra table space.

2) A Place for Clothes

Clothes sell best when hanging. We purchased a Collapsible Clothing Rackjust for this purpose. It has definitely been well used over the years and helped us earn more money for our clothing.

We also have used a make shift clothing rack out of two ladders, a rod, and bungee cords. Use caution with this method.

3) Merchandise your Items

Organize your items by what they are and what you have.

Table categories we have used are:

  • Books/Media
  • Toys
  • Linens
  • Housewares
  • Decorations
  • Christmas
  • Electronics
  • Jewelry/Candles
  • Bags/Purses
  • Guy Stuff
  • Clothing
  • Shoes

Tip: Candles and crayons are usually better in the shade to avoid melting. Ask me how I know!

The Garage Sale Handbook provides Table Category Printables to make your life a little easier!

4) Turn boxes Over

Not enough room?! Turn boxes over and use them under tables. As merchandise sells, you can move it up!

5) Price Merchandise!

Shoppers prefer items are priced to avoid an awkward check out. With multiple sellers, be sure to have your initials on the price sticker.

6) Sales Record

Use a spiral notebook and make columns for each of the sellers. It works great to have one person adding up and telling another person which column to give credit to.

You will find a FREE Sales Record Printable in The Garage Sale Handbook!

7) Table for Check Out

Set up a small table for check out. This table will hold your register/cash box and have enough room for adding up merchandise.

8) Bags

Recycled bags from the grocery store are great to have on hand. Your customers will appreciate it.

Pull your tables into the garage for the night or cover with tarps for an easy set up!

You’re prepared and ready to rock and roll! Have fun with all the new and interesting people you meet!

Awesome tips! I just had a huge garage sale recently and it was a total success, I did some of the same things. Another tip I would add is if you have small children, make sure you give them something to do. I bought a 50 pack of small chip bags and 40 pack of waters from Sam’s and had my little one in charge of it. It was a huge success and she was able to keep the money.

Aren’t garage sales fun?! Great tip Jessica! People who shop at garage sales usually love a snack. My son even played his electric guitar at one of our garage sales;0)
