Make Shorts out of High Water Jeans – Fast!

My daughter, Hazel, is growing like a weed and she’s leaving on a jet plane to a place with high humidity and temperatures much warmer than here in the Pacific Northwest.

The last time Hazel wore these high water jeans I thought they were destined for the garage sale pile. Then, l had a lightbulb moment! Why sell jeans for next to nothing at a garage sale and spend $10 – $20 on a new pair of shorts when I could make shorts out of high water jeans!

Check out how easy this was to do!

We straightened the jeans out on my nifty Fiskars self healing rotary cutting mat and then placed a pair of shorts Hazel loves over the top.

I allowed an extra inch for the ‘fold over’ and used a rotary cutter against the acrylic ruler to cut a nice straight line. Hazel helped with this!

Next, we folded the hem to the one inch mark using a sewing gauge and pressed.

I used my fingernails against the grain of the fabric to give the edge that raw look. I imagine washing will only make it better.

Tada! A new pair of shorts done in under 10 minutes!

Although Hazel is making an excellent fashion statement here, I have an even better idea for the ‘leftovers’.

Love it! A mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do when their kids grow like weeds! 😉

I was expecting something with sewing involved, but this is even simpler! I have the same fiskars mat, btw 🙂

What a great idea! My little one is always outgrowing her pants, and she never has enough shorts. (And we live in Texas!) We’ll definitely try this.
